man praying

Chukwu, zam ekpere!

Hear my cry, O God; pay attention to my prayer,
from the ends of the earth I cry unto thee
for my heart is overwhelmed,
where is the rock that is higher than I?

You say I’m loved when I don’t feel a thing
you say I’m strong when I feel all weak
you say I’m healed with pain writhing my being
you say I’ve received but it’s all ailing needs

Where are the embers of my faith?
Since when has pain caressed me?
Why does my heart throb without refrain?
From whence comes this rhythm of sobs?

But if he takes away my support,
what then?
And if he slays me on,
what then?

Ain’t it a life laid at his feet
to the service and will of the King?
Why do I croon at the face of suffering
for a life not mine – a living sacrifice?

Hear my cry, O God; pay attention to my prayer,
from the ends of the earth I cry unto thee
for my heart is overwhelmed,
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I!

“Chukwu, zam ekpere!” is a cry in the Igbo dialect that says “God, answer my prayer!”…

Have you had those moments where it felt like the heavens were shut up against you and it all didn’t make sense?
